Bacalar
Bacalar, also known as the lagoon of the 7 colors or the Mexican Maldives is a hidden paradise that we feel in love with. The town of Bacalar is located about 4 hours south of Cancun, near the Belize border and it its pretty much virgin territory. Here, you will not find all-inclusive resorts, fancy restaurants or retail stores, and because of this it is a very affordable place to visit. Most of the tourists we saw where European backpackers or Mexican tourist.
So why is it called the lagoon of the 7 colors? Because the bottom of the lagoon is pretty uneven, and the color of the water changes depending on the depth. You can walk for meters and the water can first reach your ankles, then your knees, your waist, your ankles again, or you can reach areas where you can't touch the bottom. Aside from the beautiful clear turquois water, Bacalar is also home to stromatolites. Stromatolites have been in existence since the Cambrian age and hence are considered living fossils. They resemble rock like structures that are made up different types of bacteria and one of their function is to provide oxygen to the surrounding environment. There is only a few stromatolites left in the world so their preservation is vital to prevent their extinction. In Bacalar you are prohibited from walking on, touching, or disturb them in any way, you are also encouraged by locals to use organic sunscreen as to protect not only the stromatolites but the entire lagoon habitat.
During our stay in the lagoon our days consisted of visiting one of the many water parks with access to the lagoon, kayaking, sun bathing, or snorkeling. We pretty much spent 80% of our time in the lagoon, and it was great! We did do the one tour that they have available, which consisted of a boat trip around the lagoon, visited the cenotes, and heard stories about the pirate channel, we also had free time to mud bathe and jump from a platform.
