We visited Hong Kong right after we had been in Japan, and boy was it a totally different experience. We stayed at Mong Kok, one of the main shopping hubs and a very central location to the places that we wanted to visit. The train station was just a few steps away and we had plenty of restaurants and shopping centers to explore, including the famous Ladies Market. It didn’t matter what time of day we left the Airbnb, the streets were always busy with tourists and locals alike, definitely a popular area to stay at. Also, on the weekends at night some streets get closed for street performers and karaoke, yes! there is actual karaoke out on the street!
One of the things that we really loved about this city is its views. Hong Kong’s skyline is in our opinion one of the best one in the world, and the nightly lasershow makes it even better. There are several spots both paid and free were you can appreciate the skyline. One of the free options is from the Avenue of Stars, however, at the time of our visit the boardwalk was closed for remodeling so we ended up a the Kowloon pier right by the Clock tower, which in our opinion ended up being a better view. Another popular option is to go up to The Peak for some amazing panoramic views of the city and Victoria harbor. To get here you can either take a 10min tramp (you have to pay for this) or take a 3+ hour hike up Victoria peak, however, once up you will be rewarded with some spectacular views. The third option is to go to the 46th floor of Central Plaza (free) near Times Square.
Another nice attraction that we enjoyed was visiting the Nan Lian Garden. Here you will find a number of lotus gardens, ponds, and Buddhist temples, one of them being the Chin Lin Nunnery. If you do visit this temple make sure to be respectful as this is a site of worship.
During our stay in Hong Kong one of the things that we noticed was the contrast of buildings in the city, specially in mainland. You can see some of the most modern avant garde buildings right next to old, poorly maintained ones. A second thing that we noticed was their subway system, it was one of the best and easiest to navigate subways we’ve used. Thirdly, even though Hong Kong is part of China we hardly had any issue to communicate in English, an this is because HK used to be under British rule until 1997 when it was reverted back to Chinese rule.
Overall, Hong Kong is a great place to visit, it has a fair amount of tourist attractions from temples, to views, to hikes, to malls and markets. You can make day trips to Macau the Asian ‘Las Vegas’ or to Lantau Island, where you can visit Tin Tan buddha. All in all, Hong Kong should definitely be in your bucket list.
