La Huasteca Potosina

For this adventure We rented a car in San Luis Potosi and drove 4hrs to Aquismon. A town that is centrally located to the places we wanted to visit; The Edward James's Surrealist Garden, El sotano de las Golondrinas and the Tamul waterfall.

Jardin Surrealista de Edwards James

In our first morning we drove to Xilitla a town that is 40 kilometers from Aquismon, here we visited the Edward James Surrealist Garden. This place is famous for its fairylike arquitecture which was created by british poet Edward James.  During his visit to Mexico he became fascinated by the peace and beauty of Xilitla that he decided to create a sanctuary  surrounded by a variety of plants and animals.  After his death the sanctuary was open to the public as a tourist attraction. If you decide to visit the garden then make sure to bring mosquito repellant, bring comfortable clothes, and be ready for a mild workout.

Aside from getting lost in the beauty of the place you can also enjoy a swim at Las Pozas, which are natural pools located throughout the garden. We wanted to enjoy a swim to cool down from the humidity of the place but the water was so cold that we backed down. However, bring your bathing suit just in case!

Cascada Tamul

On our second day we drove north to La Cascada Tamul. Here you have the option of either pay for a shared or a private boat. We chose the  private boat since we thought it would be nice to go at our own pace,  a decision that we later regret, as you need to row 45 mins each way! if you get a shared boat not only is it cheaper but it is easier to row.

Mid way towards the waterfall there is a section that is rough to row in, so our guide told us to get off the boat and walk for a small portion of the way. Meanwhile, he started pulling the boat into calmer waters and we continued our journey to the waterfall.

Due to safety, the boats stops at a huge rock that is located in front of the waterfall where you can climb and take a picture with the waterfall as your background.

On the way back from the waterfall we stopped at La Cueva de Agua. This is a cenote-like cave that is filled with crystal clear and very cold water.

Sotano de las Golondrinas

Sotano de las Golondrinas

On the last day of our stay we drove early morning to El Sotano de las Golondrinas  (Cave of Swallows) this is a vertical cave that is 300 meters deep.  Adrenaline junkies can base jump to the bottom of the cave, or you can stay at the base where you can watch a flock of parakeets fly out giving a spectacular show. If your goal is to see the birds then you can either see them early morning when they leave the cave, or at dusk when they come back.  Sadly we were not able to see this as there were many tourist making noise and scared the birds from coming out. So if you do visit this place, make sure to stay quiet and encourage others to do the same.
